Therapist in Darien, CT
My Office Is the Next Town Over
Most people looking for a therapist in Darien end up choosing on logistics as much as anything else. Whoever is closest, whoever has a slot, whoever makes it easiest to actually turn up week after week. That is not a shallow way to choose. Consistency is a large part of what makes therapy work.
So the practical answer first. I am Jon Abelack, a Licensed Clinical Social Worker, and my practice is at 180 Bridle Path Lane in New Canaan, the town directly north of Darien. For most of Darien that is a short drive rather than an expedition. I also work online across Connecticut and New York.
Therapy Around a Commute
Darien is a commuter town, with two stations on the line into Grand Central, and a good number of the people I see are making that trip. When someone tells me they have been meaning to start therapy for two years, the obstacle is almost never willingness. It is the calendar.
Two things help. The first is that my office is close enough to Darien that getting there does not consume an evening. The second is that online sessions here are a full option rather than a fallback, so a week that goes sideways does not have to mean a missed session. Plenty of my clients move between the two depending on what the week looks like.
What People Bring to Me
The cost of keeping it all running
The commute, the job, the family, the house. Each one manageable, and the combination quietly grinding. This is the most common thing I hear in the first session, usually described as something much smaller.
Anxiety that does not look like anxiety
High-functioning anxiety is easy to miss from the outside, because the work still gets done and nobody has raised it. It is still exhausting to live inside.
Marriage and relationships
Couples work has been one of the main threads of my practice throughout my career. I see partners together, and I also work with individuals on their side of a relationship when only one of them wants to come.
Being stuck at a high level
Successful on paper, flat in practice. Often the hardest version to talk about, because there is no obvious problem to point at and it can feel indulgent to raise.
Depression
Low mood, loss of interest, and the sense that things have gone grey, whether or not there is a reason attached.
Dating
Patterns that keep repeating, and the gap between the relationship you say you want and the ones you keep choosing.
Why My Background Matters Here
Before I became a psychotherapist I spent more than twenty years in director-level sales and marketing, most of it in financial services. I made that commute. I carried the number. I know what it costs at home, and you will not have to explain your industry to me from scratch.
I also hold a Peak Performance Coach credential from the Flow Research Collective. Coaching and therapy are not the same thing and they do not suit the same problem, so part of the first call is working out which of the two you are actually after.
Couples Counseling for Darien Couples
I hold Level 1 training in the Gottman Method, Relational Life Therapy and Emotionally Focused Therapy, and I use them together rather than picking one.
In the room that means I am not going to referee the argument you walked in having. I will listen hard to both of you, and then say what I think is actually driving it, including the parts that are uncomfortable to hear. If you want someone to nod along, I am the wrong choice. If you want someone straight with you, this tends to work.
How I Work
My clinical training is in Gestalt therapy, through a four-year fellowship, and I bring in Cognitive Behavioral Therapy and Solution-Focused work where the situation calls for it. Nobody gets handed a standard protocol.
Expect the first session to be a real conversation about your history rather than a form-filling exercise. You leave it knowing what I think is going on and what I would suggest doing about it, and the decision to continue is yours.
Fees and Insurance
My fees are $250 for individual sessions and $300 for couples sessions. I am an out-of-network provider. After each session I will supply you with a superbill, which you can submit to your insurance company for possible out-of-network reimbursement. Coverage varies between plans, so please contact your insurance company to find out what your out-of-network benefits cover.
Getting Started
Start with the free fifteen minute call. That is enough time for you to describe the situation and for me to say honestly whether I am the right person for it. If I am not, I would rather tell you and suggest someone else than take the booking. Nothing obliges you to go further.

Usually, yes, and it is worth raising on the first call rather than assuming it will not. Between a nearby office and online sessions, most commuting schedules can be accommodated one way or the other.

Yes, and a fair number of people do. I am licensed in both Connecticut and New York, so online work is available anywhere in either state, and it is not treated as a lesser version of the work.

Both, and often the same person over time. Couples have been a core part of my caseload for years, and where one partner is not ready to come in, I will work with the other on their own half of it.

A short, plain conversation. You sketch out what is happening and what you want to change, I ask a few questions, and I give you a straight answer on fit. Nobody is going to sell you anything.
